Discover the islands, traditions and extraordinary textile heritage of Shetland on a knitting adventure like no other!
Shetland and knitting are woven together through centuries of history. From the intricate patterns of Fair Isle to delicate Shetland lace and the distinctive rhythm of the knitting belt, the islands have inspired generations of knitters and textile makers.
Our Shetland Summer Knit Adventure invites you to step into this rich heritage and experience it for yourself. Along the way, you’ll learn from renowned instructors and talented local craftspeople, explore the landscapes and communities that have shaped Shetland knitting, meet sheep and farmers, discover incredible yarns and textiles — and of course, have plenty of time to knit!
Your adventure begins in Edinburgh, where we’ll gather for a taste of the textile treasures that await. At the Scottish Textiles Showcase, you’ll discover glorious yarns, fabrics and Scottish craftsmanship right in the heart of the city. That evening, we’ll raise a glass and get to know your fellow knitting companions over a special welcome dinner before setting off north the following morning.
Our journey takes us through Dundee, where we’ll step aboard the legendary RSS Discovery, the remarkable ship associated with the Antarctic expeditions of Scott and Shackleton. Next door, we’ll visit the V&A Dundee Design Gallery, with time for lunch and a guided tour, before continuing to Aberdeen.
Then comes the magic of the sea: we’ll board the overnight ferry and wake to the rugged beauty of Shetland.
Over the next four days and three nights, Shetland becomes our home as we explore the islands, travelling through spectacular coastal landscapes, remote communities and places steeped in textile history.
And, of course, there’s plenty of knitting!
You’ll enjoy three half-day workshops, with opportunities to explore the distinctive techniques and traditions of Shetland knitting. Try your hand at Fair Isle, discover the unique skill of knitting with a Shetland knitting belt, and explore the delicate beauty of Shetland lace. There will also be time to hunt for beautiful local yarns and perhaps find a few treasures to take home.
But this is so much more than a knitting tour.
We’ll visit farms and meet the sheep behind the wool, discover the fascinating Shetland Textile Museum, and take a special day trip across the water to Bressay Island and Garths Croft. We’ll explore the ancient archaeological site of Jarlshof, gather together for an evening knitting circle and experience the unique character of Shetland from coast to coast.
And between it all? Time to simply soak it in.
Look out across dramatic cliffs and windswept beaches, watch the sea stretch towards the horizon, breathe in the fresh island air and keep your eyes peeled for Shetland’s wonderfully cheeky wildlife. With a little luck, there may even be puffins!
After our Shetland adventure, we’ll sail overnight back to Aberdeen before continuing to Dundee for an overnight stay. Along the way, we’ll make a very special visit to Balmerino Sheep Farm, where the star attraction is sure to be its adorable cashmere goats!
Our journey south continues with a visit to Glamis Castle, the childhood home of The Queen Mother, followed by a stop at Strathmore Woollen Co. before we make our way back to Edinburgh.
But we’re not finished yet!
Back in the city, there’s time to visit Kathy’s Knits, enjoy some free time to explore and shop, and meet knitwear designer Lucy Hague for a fascinating chat about her work and creative journey.
Finally, we’ll come together one last time for a farewell dinner at Badger & Co., raising a glass to new friendships, beautiful memories, inspiring landscapes — and, naturally, plenty of knitting!
From Edinburgh’s textile treasures to Shetland’s wild shores, this is a summer adventure for anyone who loves knitting, Scottish heritage, beautiful landscapes and the joy of discovering something new.
Pack your knitting needles, bring your sense of adventure, and join us for an unforgettable journey into the heart of Shetland knitting.
