New Lanark Mill A unique 18th century mill and UNESCO heritage site
New Lanark Mill is a unique 18th century mill and UNESCO heritage site. The mill was founded in 1786 and taken over in 1800 by Robert Owen, an influential social reformer. In Owen's time over 2,500 people lived and worked at New Lanark, many from the poorhouses of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Today, New Lanark has been lovingly restored as a living past. Visitors can see recreated millworkers’ homes and the adjacent ‘Falls of Clyde’ waterfalls. There is also a chance to see historic working textile machinery, and take the ‘Annie McLeod Experience’, a fascinating ‘dark ride’ that tells the eye-opening story of a child millworker!
Waulking with Wool with the Inverclyde Waulking Song Group
Sgioba Luaidh Inbhirchluaidh (Inverclyde Waulking Song Group) came together in 2000 to perform and keep alive the traditional Gaelic songs which in former times accompanied daily work in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Waulking is the technique of finishing newly woven cloth by soaking it and beating it to shrink and soften it. In the days before the job was taken over by machinery, songs were used to keep the rhythm, and to lighten the hard work. For the women-folk who took part it was an enjoyable social occasion, with plenty of fun and gossip. Sgioba Luaidh re-create the process in authentic, and often hilarious fashion.
Scottish Lace Knitting Class with Samira of Eildon Hill Designs!
In this workshop, Samira will show you how lace knitting works, how to knit lace, how to read lace pattern instructions and charts, and trouble shooting skills so that you can tackle any lace project with confidence, all while you get started with knitting her beautiful Bemersyde Shawl!
First published in the Journal of Scottish Yarns in 2022, and now exclusive to Knitting Tours workshops, the shawl is knitted from the bottom up, making the lace motifs on the point at the start easier to learn on a small number of stitches, before adding more repeats as the shawl grows larger. The Bemersyde Shawl is also great to customise, as it can be knitted to any desired size; one skein of 4-ply yarn creates a shawlette, while two skeins will make for a large, embracing shawl, and knitters have the freedom to cast off at any time.
