Aran Islands – Inishmore What better way to learn about Irish knitting than on Inishmore, one of the famous Aran Islands!

Inishmore is the largest and most westerly of the three Aran Islands. The Aran Islands are the original home of the famous Aran sweater. On Inishmore, the Aran Sweater Market contains a vast selection of Aran knitwear and visitors to shop can follow the heritage of the Aran sweater by watching their audio-visual exhibition to see the growth of the Aran sweater from an island craft to a global fashion favourite. Of course visitors to Inishmore may also want to visit its clifftop fort Dún Aonghasa and its nearby ‘Worm Hole’, the medieval Seven Churches and Kilmurvey Beach.

Connemara is a region in western Ireland, along the Wild Atlantic Way.

It has a varied and rugged coastline with many small coves, bays and quaint fishing villages like Roundstone. Connemara National Park is an enormous area of mountains, bogland and lakes. Our tours of Connemara often visit Kylemore Abbey, a beautiful Benedictine monastery founded in the 1920’s.

Westport is a picturesque riverside town on the edge of an Atlantic inlet, on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

The town centre is Georgian in heritage and a number of stone bridges link the tree-lined walkway on the banks of the Carrowbeg River. Westport House is Westport’s busiest attraction, once the ancestral home of the Browne Family, it now offers guided tours of the house and there are nice grounds to walk around. Wesport is the idea location to explore Achill island to the Northwest and Croagh Patrick to the West.

The Museum of Country Life is located in Turlough County Mayo in Ireland

The museum exhibits the way of life of rural Irish people between 1850 and 1950. There are exhibitions about the home, the natural environment, trades and crafts, communities, and working on the land and water. Of particular interest to our knitting tour groups are the exhibitions on traditional clothing and how they were made in the home.

Foxford Woollen Mills is an authentic woollen mill in County Mayo.

The mill is still in operation and visitors can take a tour and see master craftspeople at work on the pieces that Foxford deliver to customers all around the globe. Their collection includes furnishing fabrics as well as a collection of cushions and throws that are all designed in vibrant colour themes by Irish designer Helen McAlinden.

County Donegal is a largely Irish-speaking area bordering the Atlantic Ocean in northwest Ireland.

Donegal is famed for its castles, rugged coastline and mountains such as the majestic Mount Errigal which measures 749 meters. Donegal has a rugged coastline and several natural sea loughs. Its Slieve League cliffs are amongst the highest in Europe, and Donegal is home to Malin Head, the most northerly point on the island of Ireland.

Studio Donegal is an iconic spinning & hand weaving business in the scenic, Gaeltacht village of Kilcar, Co. Donegal

Visitors are invited to go through the mill and watch the weaving process unfold, from blending colours of fleece to watching the Victorian spinning mule in action to preparing the warp threads for the weavers and watching the weavers skilfully weave their beautiful tweeds.

Galway, a waterfront city on Ireland’s western coast, is located where the River Corrib meets the Wild Atlantic Ocean.

The city’s core is the 18th-century Eyre Square, a popular meeting place encircled by many excellent restaurants and pubs offering some of the best traditional Irish music. Galway is a hub for creativity and you will find craft shops of all shapes and sizes that line its cobbled walkways.

Killary Sheep Farm is a Traditional working Connemara sheep farm located high in the mountains overlooking Killary Fjord.

At the farm visitors experience skilled sheepdog demonstrations, turf cutting demonstrations, sheep shearing demonstrations and bottlefeeding orphan lambs. Tom welcomes visitors of all ages and looks forward to introducing you to the sheep and the dogs.
